Mailbox Policy
This policy is in reference to damage to mailboxes on streets maintained by Forks Township. The purpose is to establish a clear and specific policy on what the Township will provide when Township crews have damaged a mailbox while plowing snow.
Broken Posts
The property owner must notify the Public Works Department within 24 hours of the damage. The Director of Public Works will review each claim of damage for authenticity. Forks Township will first attempt to provide a temporary repair to the post so as not to interrupt mail service.
If the post is broken beyond repair the property owner may request reimbursement in the amount of $ 25. The Forks Township Public Works Department will not install replacement posts. The property owner must notify the Public Works Department when they have completed installation so Public Works can remove the temporary post.
Broken Mailbox
The property owner must notify the Public Works Department within 24 hours of the damage. The Director of Public Works will review each claim of damage for authenticity. If the mailbox is not secured to the post, the Public Works Department will make every effort to re-secure the mailbox to the post.
If the mailbox is broken beyond repair the property owner may request reimbursement in the amount of $ 15. The Forks Township Public Works Department will not install replacement mailboxes.
If it is determined that the original placement of the mailbox post led to it being damaged, such as the mailbox itself protruding into the cart way, the homeowner will not be reimbursed and will be required to place the new post as per the United States Postal Service requirements.
